I just got a Vita with 3.55 firmware, so I am wondering what is better - ecfw or taihenkaku? Can I load taihenkaku while in ecfw?

With Retroarch you can emulate PS1 games (PS1 support as a part of adrenaline is coming in the future) so, no bubbles but yes the games are playable. For PSP games Adrenaline is your answer. There are very few benefits to staying on 3.55 and many benefits to go to 3.60 and get the new mods.

With the development of TaiHENkaku lately, it's ill advised to stay on a lower firmware.
Not only can you benefit from Vita games, you can also install Adrenaline (you'll have to use a PSP mini or PSP Demo or PSP game) which is kinda like TN-X (the PSP XMB on Vita one) and around February/March, you'l be able to enjoy PS1 games on it as well.

Not to mention that emulators in Vita mode run a lot better then in PSP mode.

I just picked up a vita with firmware 1.81 - do the same rules apply? I really don't care much for Vita games...
