What is the best way to mod the gamecube?

Softmod, or just go with a hardmod?

I am not at all familiar with the GC scene other then I know that the XenoGC is one of the better mod chips out there.

I am trying to figure the best thing to do prior to going away to college.

Really? So what is the SD Media Launcher for?
It's a hardmod ( chip or external device ) wich loads via the GC memory card.
It requires an unmodified Gamecube or Wii in Gamecubemode.

To be clear a softmod does not require any 3rd party hardware to operate.
The gamecube cannot be hacked on a software basis alone.

There are two ways to mod a gamecube:

1-Hardmoding: Using one of the avaible gamecube chips like Xenogc, Viper, Wiikey Fusion, etc. This way you can play backups and load homebrew through dvd, sd gecko using Swiss, etc.

2-Softmoding: Using Action Replay gamecube, Sd Media Launcher, Phantasy Star Online exploit, etc. This way you need to use the sd gecko to load your homebrew and Swiss if you want to play backups. Between the three previous methods, the Sd Media Launcher is the easier and comes with a sd gecko like adapter, but has the limitation that only recognizes sd cards 4 gb and below, of course after you load Swiss the sd card size limitation disapears. With all of these methods you can also play backups trough sd.

Hmm. Wiikey Fusion/WODE if you can find one? But it's a bit tricky to install since it's designed for the Wii. Sure beats disc loading though :)
I imagine GC modchips are going to be hard to find as well. The SD Media Launcher is still readily available though, and it's the easiest way to run homebrew/backups. The only annoyance being that in order to use SDHC cards, you have to load a homebrew from a non-SDHC card that is capable of reading SDHC cards, and then swap the cards. So you basically have to get up to do that whole process every time you want to play a game :P
