BBC said:
A panel of the Japanese Justice Ministry has proposed raising the age of consent from 13 to 16. It forms part of a wider overhaul of Japan's laws on sex crimes, after multiple rape acquittals in 2019 caused outcry. The proposal also aims to criminalise the grooming of minors and expand the definition of rape. The statute of limitations for reporting rape will also be increased to 15 from 10 years. Currently, Japan has the lowest age of consent in developed countries, and the lowest in the G7 group. In Germany and Italy the age is 14, in Greece and France it is 15 and in the UK and many US states it is 16.
Kind of shocking that the age of consent has remained so low for so long, but better to fix it late than never I suppose. Meanwhile in hillbilly news...

Newsweek said:
The Wyoming Republican Party is seeking to kill a bill working its way through the state Legislature proposing to raise the state's legal marriage age to 16, arguing that putting "arbitrary" limits on child marriage interferes with parental rights and religious liberty. The debate has been a longstanding one in Wyoming.

Currently, Wyoming is one of just eight states in the country—including California, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Washington and West Virginia—without a minimum age requirement for marriage, and it currently ranks among the top ten states in the country for child marriages, according to a 2021 study by advocacy group Unchained at Last. Efforts to raise the age of marriage in the state have consistently stalled. For years, now-retired Laramie Democratic Representative Charles Pelkey sponsored legislation to raise the age of marriage to 18, only to fail with every effort.

Other states, like Tennessee, have actually sought to go in the opposite direction, with Republicans there seeking last year to eliminate any limits on marriage entirely until public outrage forced them to reverse course.
Having traveled through the state a few times when necessary, this I can't say I'm surprised about. Dick Cheney basically owns Wyoming, and child marriage is one of those long-outdated traditions that only religious nuts and 1800s-style regressives would fight to keep around. Despite this, pro-child marriage representatives within the Republican party continue to enjoy widespread support among their voter base. Something to keep in mind as the right-wing continues to ramp up its virtue signalling in regard to the safety and well-being of minors.

"Just raised"
That implies it took them, all the way until fucking 2023 to decide "Oh this might be a bad idea"

Well, you have to take into account that Democrats owned that state for 80+ solid years, until just a few years ago. But if you'd bothered to check that chart linked by @tabzer above, you'd know this puts WV out in front on this issue, along with KY, MA, and LA.

Wow that's such a solid 80+ years. Man there's just so much blue.
I didn't know 1964 was relevant
(this is the presidential elections)
I'll go ahead and double check if the legislature was owned by democrats. But I'm finding that increasingly unlikely.

Edit:
here's west Virginia, my dumb-ass brain defaulted to the topic state. There's 40 elections listed. About half are blue. But considering the amount of flips and flops. I wouldn't call it solid. still not solid 80+

Regardless of who controls what. underaged marriage, idc, is terrible, end of story.

West Virginia just raised it's marriage consent age from 16 to 18, and its legislature is dominated by Republicans.

Maybe it's more just a Wyoming thing, than a D / R thing.
Good on them, but one state does not a pattern make when Republicans continue to be the only party aggressively opposing reforms on this issue. Not to mention the fact that they can always introduce legislation to attempt to undo any progress that has been made, as was the case with Tennessee recently (per the same article).

Also, your link, Newsweek. Aren't they the ones that offered weight losing tips for transgender children?
Thank you for bringing this up unprompted and exemplifying the reason why nobody can or should take right-wing virtue signalling seriously.

You're showing the results for the Presidential races. I'm talking about the state legislature. This is a thread about state-level legislative action.

Even if you live in California and marry a 12 year old, "legitimately", it doesn't mean that you aren't a pedophile. FYI.

Also, your link, Newsweek. Aren't they the ones that offered weight losing tips for transgender children?
According to the chart, only 1 state allows underage marriage without parental consent. All the other states require parental consent. Though I can see the concern with parental consent after seeing so many parents taking preteens and toddlers to sexualized drag shows.

It sounds like @Xzi would be against a 16 year old boy and 17 year old pregnant girl to get married to raise their child.

Which means nothing when religious fundies are still giving their daughters away for marriage to pedos at the age of 13 or younger. Let me guess: as long as all parties involved call themselves "Christian," you approve.

Very much against teen pregnancy in general, for sex education in high schools to prevent it, and for access to safe abortion to avoid making bad situations even worse.

I was describing my situation when I was 16.
Tragic, no wonder you peaked in high school. Thankfully teen births have been on a downward trend since the 90s, but the US still has one of the highest teenage birth rates among industrialized nations. Probably won't surprise you to hear the five states with the highest teen birth rates are all red states, per Wikipedia.

Obviously, you've never been to college since you use Wikipedia as a serious source. Maybe children should get their sex education from drag queens. I bet that gets you all tingling just thinking about it.

Not necessarily saying the list of top states would be different, but birth rates ≠ pregnancy rates. If ya know what I'm sayin'.
Aborted babies are not counted as pregnancies. They aren't even human to these people, even though they are made up of human DNA, but screw science. Who needs it when one has a narrative to push.

The sources Wikipedia cites are fair game when it comes to college assignments, I used them all the time. Wikipedia itself can't be used simply because it's an aggregate of sources rather than its own source. Can't believe this is something you need explained to you.

Couldn't care less who teaches sex ed in high schools as long as they don't teach worthless abstinence-only lessons.

True, but a pregnancy and a birth are on two completely different levels when it comes to long-term impact on peoples' lives.

The reason why is because wikipedia uses a collection of sources. Which for the most part, the professors want to see competence in their students and grab the actual article. Wikipedia is fine as a launching pad. If you want to descredit the exact page, your going to have to disprove the sources used within it

Ah, the classic personal insult when they run out of arguments, the popcorn tastes extra good today.
First, I literally made an additional argument in the same post. Second, you're ignoring the fact that TraitorPat resorted to personal insults before me. It's amusing that you don't view him as capable of defending himself, though.
