After 5 years, 10 months, and 17 days worth of service, Microsoft has their support page showing that Windows 10 will be no more. The page shows that the retirement day is Oct. 14, 2025. Windows 10 first released on July 29th, 2015, meaning that it'll be a decade old when it's retired. There is still one more update in the works, 21H1, the Sun Valley update. It plans to do a complete facelift on on the OS, with a new UI.

UPDATE
Apparently, I had been wrong on this. It was actually known in 2015, so any reports saying that it was just put on are incorrect. Thank you @Seriel for the info.

Windows 11 is coming soon, along with the 21H2 update. I don't think they're the same thing though, as 21H2 should still be a major Windows 10 update.

21H1 is already out.

Sun Valley (with the new UI) might very well be Windows 11.

It makes no sense whatsoever for Microsoft to push out a big update to "Windows 10" at the same time as working on "Windows 11"

What they call each release of the operating system is a marketing decision, it's currently Windows NT with a kernal version of 10.

Bumping the version means they can cut off people who haven't bought a new machine in years and get some extra revenue.

There are rumours they might keep doing the 'free' upgrade, with the possible ability to continue using W7/8.1 keys:
https://www.xda-developers.com/you-may-be-able-to-upgrade-from-windows-7-to-windows-11-for-free/

Although whether there may be driver issues, I don't know.

edit:

I wonder if the version bump is happening because of the significant differences, at least UI wise? Particularly for corporate users who may not be happy to see the change.

I know the pricing of electronics nowadays isn't "how much it actually costs" but "how much we can get away with", but putting up a poll is just cynical.
