Apparently, I had been wrong on this. It was actually known in 2015, so any reports saying that it was just put on are incorrect. Thank you @Seriel for the info.

You can find many 2015 articles reporting the exact same thing. Convenient how everybody forgot until now.
And 2025 is hardly "soon" by a lot of definitions.
There is still one more update in the works, 21H1, the Sun Valley update. It plans to do a complete facelift on on the OS, with a new UI.
Bumping the version means they can cut off people who haven't bought a new machine in years and get some extra revenue.
