I imagine it's way more profitable for them to just sell classic editions then selling VC games for dirt cheap.
Not really, not if they're doing limited editions like the NES Classic was. Switch hardware sales are guaranteed to be more profitable now, let alone in the future when more Switches hit shelves and each "Classic" console sells out in a day.

Using the nes classic as a precedent, the snesc will be more of a novelty that's supported for a handful of months to help generate capital (gotta make up for money lost on the wii u), but there is no way it will replace the virtual console. It may take a while longer for the switch's online services to be fully implemented, but the variety of titles available will far outstrip the snes classic and make the wait well worth it.
