Nintendo Switch firmware update 16.0.0 released, Atmosphere update coming soon

saddsad.png

A new update is available! Nintendo has just released a firmware update for the Switch, bringing it to version 16.0.0. The patch notes are pretty sparse, only offering a single specific change, which merely replaces unusable nicknames with "???". There's also some general system stability improvements, which unsurprisingly break support for CFW. SciresM has announced that a compatability update for Atmosphere will be worked on as soon as possible.

Ver. 16.0.0 (Released February 20, 2023)

  • User nicknames that cannot be used will be replaced with “???” which can be updated from the profile settings.
  • General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience.

I accidentally updated again. Disappointed in myself for making that mistake.

For the future what’s the easiest way possible to disable update pop ups from appearing?

Would I still be able to access and download via tinfoil if I used this setting?
Absolutely. It only blocks Ninty servers and masks your Prodinfo. Tinfoil uses none of those.

test your config with 90DNS Tester to make sure the block is in place and read your Serial number (should be all 000s).

  • 90DNSTester -- DNS tester to make sure Ninty can't find you while playing hide-n-seek!

So evidently, Nintendo shot down retro's attempts for other Metroid games because they famously misunderstood what a bounty hunter is known to do.

Evidently, Nintendo also famously fail to understand what versioning means in software development.

I also have to question why no expansion on the themes feature. At the least, I would have expected that there might have been some high contrast themes or something similar.
Nintendo uses semver and versions based off api https://semver.org/
Evidently, many people fail to undertstand how this fairly common versioning method works.

Whew…this one seems to be a bugger.

One could even go so far to say it’s an ”api breaking” change and thus worthy of a major point release according to the rules of semver.

Nintendo didn't change a goddamn thing, let alone enough to warrant a major increment. What the actual eff are you on about?
Quite the contrary, they actually changed a ton: https://switchbrew.org/wiki/16.0.0
Any changes or removals of IPC commands alone mandate a bump to the major version, as they're api breakages. User facing stuff is completely irrelevant (except if it causes breakages).

The day I decided to mod my old switch is the day Nintendo decides to release more stability. The game prompted me to update console in stock in order to play it and now I am stuck at waiting.

They changed enough that it broke atmosphere (as well as compatibility with older HOS versions, I'd assume) making it a major update in that versioning system.

Pssh... I've already given up all hopes on homebrew for XKJ serial units. Whatever. At least with the steam deck, I don't need to tinker with anything to run unsigned code, including nintendo emulators.

So you had enough money to buy a steam deck but not enough to pay the difference if you sold your patched model and bought an unpatched?

So based off the severe changes should we expect a new atmosphere release to likely take atleast a few more days?

It will be released when it's been done. Just remember that these people that are smart enough to do the software, do it for fun and are not being paid, they also have jobs, sleep, eat meals, spend time with their families, and do this in their spare time when they are not busy doing something else. Don't bother with asking for timescales, you'll get it once it's complete and been tested & not before.
