New report claims the Switch's successor will launch next year, with third-party developers in possession of dev kits

download (1).jpeg

The rumour mill continues around the successor to the Switch, but is this one the one? According to Video Games Chronicle, and corroborated by Eurogamer, Nintendo is likely to release its next-gen hardware in the second half of 2024. VGC's sources, which include "multiple people with knowledge of Nintendo's next-gen console plans", claim that the device will be useable in handheld mode and support physical cartridges like the Switch. However, backwards compatibility remains unclear.

The next-gen hardware will also apparently sport an LCD display, instead of an OLED one, in order to keep costs low while packing higher storage for higher fidelity games. Dev kits of the system are also with key partners, according to the report.

Of course, take this report with a grain of salt as these are unofficial news and rumours around a Switch Pro or Switch 2 have been around for a while. But eventually, we will get a successor to the Switch in one form or another; and whether it will replicate the latter's success remains to be seen.

If Nintendo ever releases a new console (which is far from certain as far as I'm concerned), it won't be backwards compatible, that's for sure.
Despite the GBA/DS/DSi/3DS & the Wii/WiiU offering backwards compatibility.

It would be kinda dumb for them to ditch backward compatibility. I think it's more likely to be a PS4 vs PS4 Pro situation, where the same games run and patches come out to enable 1080p undocked etc.

I don't think they have a choice this time around. They can't not make a hybrid console after selling upward of 130 million Switches, and if they're making another hybrid on a very similar chipset, there's no excuse for lack of backward compatibility. Unless they just don't give a damn about adoption rate of the new console, it will be backward compatible.
Which is precisely why I believe a new Nintendo console will not be happening any time soon. They have absolutely zero reason to bother making a new console at this point. They can't possibly support a new console unless there's no backwards compatibility in order to be able to recycle the old catalogue yet again. Here are the possibilities :
- they keep milkin the Switch for all its worth and keep on making outrageous profits ;
- they release a new console with no backwards compatibility : which means being able to recycle old games again but losing the Switch customer base. They better have a killer launch game to pull it off, thing is Nintendo has lost its touch and is only able to produce cheap games nowadays ;
- they release a new console with backwards compatibility : they keep the Switch customer base but they've almost run out of games to re-release, so the new console is bound to be pointless with barely any new noteworthy releases each year.

A more powerful hardware means games are more expensive to produce, and we all know Nintendo is getting cheaper and cheaper. So what's the point in a new system anyway.

The GBA/DS/Wii etc contexts were vastly different... :wtf:

well it has to be portable and has to have like 3 hour battery so you cant put that much power on it unless you want a very very heavy battery and handheld.

PS4 is already achievable and I'm sure Nintendo could manage this at 3hr battery charge.

Next year when the consolenos due to launch this will be much more possible again.

Switch Pro coming next year? Not interested unless it has CFW.

It is probably going to be like the New 3DS having similar number of exclusive game.

It is probably going to beat ROG Ally as far as Switch games compatibility are concerned.

You want PS5 level buy a gaming laptop.
PS4 level has already been exceeded by the many gaming handheld. What you will get from Nintendo is running Switch games better. If they don't have 100% compatibility then shame on Nintendo.

I think we can count on faster load time and no slow down where the current Switch struggle to maintain frame rate.

I'm confused by your comment? I never said I wanted PS5 level? Lol

Can you put that difference into words?
For the wii offering support to gamecube games and wii u offering support to wii games, it's because their hardwares architecture are almost the same. It's still a shame they didnt give native support to gamecube games for the wii u

What makes you think the Switch 2 isn't going to be "almost the same" as Switch?

Or at least as "almost the same" as gamecube/Wii/WiiU were.

I never said anything about that.
In fact, i sure hope there is backward compatibility. It would be pretty dumb for nintendo to not offer any kind of compatibility with switch games

I'm curious how it would be possible to modchip the Switch if it has a different hardware revision, perhaps its the same as the OLED or the Mariko.
Don’t count on it coming quick - different architecture, just backwards compatible. It’ll effectively be Mariko all over again if that’s the path the company chooses.

I mean, yeah, of course they've got dev kits. Probably for a while now. And unless they're splitting their market again, then physical cartridges and handheld are a given. Backward compatibilityis a given, too. This isn't rumor so much as it is exactly the expected course of action.

Personally I'm just hoping for a nice nvme drive since they're relatively cheap now. Loading times are what hamper things on the switch for me. Some gimmick is expected, those mouse wheels as third back buttons seem cool, but we'll see. Bet prime 4 will come out on it.

    I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
    BakerMan @ BakerMan: would you rather have unlimited bacon but no games, or games, unlimited games, but no more games?
