DRM cracking team CODEX is retiring from the scene after 8 years

CODEX is saying goodbye. One of the biggest teams behind removing DRM from software is retiring after 8 years of cracking games. The group was formed in 2014, and started their career by cracking The Sims 4 DLC. They would later gain infamy in the scene by cracking games very shortly after their release date, managing to remove Denuvo DRM from Resident Evil 2 in less than a week, and cracking Middle-earth: Shadow of War on the day of its launch.

However, after years of providing thousands of cracks for various games across nearly every PC launcher and form of DRM, the group is moving on from the scene. Codex left a message in the form of a scene-traditional .NFO, stating they've achieved the goals they set out to do. In the eight years of their history, Codex managed to make around 7,300 releases, and ended their note by saying they hope to see competition in the scene again.

Guess they weren't doing it just to be a "pal" but nonetheless, thanks for the efforts. (If reading this) Sorry the "thrill" is gone bros. We'll be alright. *sobs*

CODEX and EMPRESS are the only two groups that have been reliably breaking Denuvo, with CODEX doing the bulk. When companies decide whether to pay millions for Denuvo and degrade the experience of their paying users with it, they would weigh the benefits of the first few weeks of no-piracy against the cost. With CODEX out if the picture, Denuvo use is going to skyrocket because it's not just securing initial sales; its permanent.

It was essentially because of multiple things; they had already reached their goal, a certain incident where a group impersonated their name, and fucked up really badly, and the fact that "their blade was now extremely dull." So... nope?
Great, that means more shitty drm that'll never be cracked. Ugh.

Sad, but there will always be a piracy group.

Don't take it for granted. There will always be people with the motivation to crack, but good enought to do the job that's more restricted, and then willing to share publicly even more. Look at the PS5, earlier versions of the firmware have been jailbroken, but the people involved have no interest in releasing it.

No, cpy did the bulk, then codex continued from that. Then they updated denuvo so now Empress is the only one doing it all

PLAZA has also confirmed that they are leaving the piracy scene after cracking ELDEN RING.

Plaza is a subgroup with CODEX, along with VREX and RUNE, so it is expected that those will leave aswell.

Empress was allegedly Codex's denuvo cracker (various things apparently line up as well to support it). So might have just been empress all along.
