[RELEASE] Trails in the Sky FC Evolution English Patch

2awXyXE.png

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (英雄伝説VI 空の軌跡) is a Japanese role-playing video game developed by Nihon Falcom. It is commonly referred to as Trails in the Sky First Chapter (英雄伝説 空の軌跡FC) to distinguish itself from the rest of the games in the Trails in the Sky series. The game is the first game in trilogy of titles, which also includes Trails in the Sky Second Chapter and Trails in the Sky the 3rd, and collectively, the titles create the sixth entry in the larger The Legend of Heroes series of video games.

A redesigned version of the game titled The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC Evolution was released in Japan for the PlayStation Vita on June 11, 2015. Evolution renovated the old designs and user interface and incorporated several new features such as voice acting and animation in scenes, additional illustrations, and enhanced battle tactics.

About
This patch provides a full English patch for Trails in the Sky FC Evolution (known as Sora no Kiseki FC Evolution in Japan). It applies the XSEED translation from the PC version of Trails in the Sky (with Evolution-exclusive content translated by our team). This patch would not exist without XSEED's translation; please buy the original game to support them: [Steam] [GOG] [Humble]. Compared to the original Trails in the Sky, the Evolution version includes the following changes:
  • Fully voiced story, with over 30,000 voiced lines
  • Redone artwork with more character portraits and event images
  • Arranged soundtrack
  • Text backlog
  • Hold X to speed up battles animations, cutscenes by 4x
  • Greatly improved text font
  • UI improvements

Known Issues
  • Text will sometimes overflow slightly past the text box (but it should never go off screen and be unreadable).
  • DLC is now supported with rePatch, but some item names and descriptions may still be in Japanese.
If you find any other bugs, please email them to Snigs at snkfcevo (dot) eng (at) gmail (dot) com, and we will probably update the patch as we work on the other games.

System Requirements
To run this translation patch, you need:
  • A PlayStation Vita or PlayStation TV running firmware version 3.60 or lower. For Vitas, buying from eBay is a good way to ensure that the version is 3.60 or lower and capable of running Henkaku, although they can be more expensive. For PSTVs, buying new on US Amazon seems to guarantee a firmware version below 3.60 and they are quite cheap at the moment.
  • A Japanese copy of Sora no Kiseki FC Evolution; physical or digital will work. It must be the Japanese version of the game, and it must be updated to the latest patch, version 1.02.
Installation (with rePatch)
Two files need to be patched: eboot.bin and data.psarc. Please ensure that your Japanese copy of Trails in the Sky FC Evolution is patched to v1.02, the latest version. The translation patch only supports the latest version.
  1. Install and enable the latest version of rePatch (2.71 alpha or later) if you do not have it already (instructions here)
  2. Download the translation patch from the link below.
  3. If you have the physical version of the game, you may optionally use NoNpDrm to rip the game to your Vita so that the game card isn't needed to play the game (instructions here).
  4. Use FAGDec (download here) and do the following steps to generate a decrypted eboot.bin:
Now run FAG Dec, select the desided game using X button and then press X button again on DECRYPT ALL(DONE). Press O to get back to main menu and press START button and select START DECRYPT(SELF) to start decrypting.
  5. In VitaShell, copy the following files to your computer:
ux:0/FAGDec/patch/PCSG00488/eboot.bin (if you are missing this file, make sure you installed the latest game patch, v1.02, from PSN before running FAGDec)
  6. You will need to obtain a decrypted copy of the data.psarc file. Browse to ux0:app/PCSG00488 (for digital) or gro0:app/PCSG00488 (for physical).
  7. Press triangle, select Open decrypted. Press SELECT to open FTP server (switch it under START key if you have USB connection chosen). You must transfer over FTP, I've confirmed transferring over USB doesn't work and still gets the encrypted file.
  8. Using FTP client on PC, connect to vita, then copy either ux0:/app/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc (for digital) or gro0:/app/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc (for physical) to your PC.
  9. If you've followed every step correctly so far, you should now have a decrypted eboot.bin and data.psarc on your PC, ready to patch.
  10. Use xdelta to patch eboot.bin. Use the following settings under Apply Patch:
Patch: eboot-originalbgm.bin or eboot-evolutionbgm.bin from the downloaded patch, depending on which soundtrack you want the patched game to use. See the FAQ below for more information.
Source File: eboot.bin copied from your Vita.
Output File: anywhere, use eboot.bin for the filename.
  11. Use xdelta to patch data.psarc. Use the following settings under Apply Patch:
Patch: data.psarc.xdelta from the downloaded patch.
Source File: data.psarc copied from your Vita.
Output File: anywhere, use data.psarc for the filename.
  12. Copy the newly patched data.psarc and eboot.bin to the following locations:
    ux0:rePatch/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc
    ux0:rePatch/PCSG00488/eboot.bin
  13. Close VitaShell and run the game.

Two files need to be patched: eboot.bin and data.psarc. Please ensure that your Japanese copy of Trails in the Sky FC Evolution is patched to v1.02, the latest version. The translation patch only supports the latest version.
  1. Download the patch from the link below.
  2. Connect the Vita to your PC via USB.
  3. You will need to use MaiDumpTool to dump and install the game in the following steps.
  4. In Mai, select Extract/Decrypt content - [PCSG00488][英雄伝説 空の軌跡FC Evolution] - Extract the game and decrypt eboot (incl. suprx). This may take around 15 minutes or so.
  5. In Mai, select Extract/Decrypt content - [PCSG00488][英雄伝説 空の軌跡FC Evolution] - Extract game patch and eboot (including suprx). This may take a couple of minutes.
  6. Return to the home menu and delete the game (back up save data first if necessary).
  7. In Mai, Install game from folder - PCSG0048.
  8. In Mai, Install patch from folder - PCSG00488_patch. Sometimes this process ends in a failure message, but it seems like it can be ignored safely.
  9. With the digital copy of the game installed, open VitaShell and copy the following files to your PC:
    ux0:app/PCSG00488/eboot.bin
    ux0:app/PCSG00488/gamedata/data.psarc
  10. Use xdelta to patch eboot.bin. Use the following settings under Apply Patch:
Patch: eboot-originalbgm.bin.xdelta or eboot-evolutionbgm.bin.xdelta from the downloaded patch, depending on which soundtrack you want the patched game to use.
  12. Copy the newly patched data.psarc from your PC back to ux0:app/PCSG0488/gamedata/, overriding the existing data.psarc. Copy the newly patched eboot.bin from your PC back to ux0:app/PCSG00488/, overriding the existing eboot.bin.
  13. Close VitaShell and run the game.

FAQs
  • I get an error when trying to launch the game!
Make sure that your original game is the Japanese version of Trails in the Sky Evolution, and that it's updated to version 1.02.
  • Will you work on Trails in the Sky SC Evolution or Trails in the Sky the 3rd Evolution?
Yes, they are planned eventually, but keep in mind that FC took over six months to complete. It's possible SC and 3rd won't require as much time as FC, but there's no way to tell for sure.
Update: SC is now released (http://gbatemp.net/threads/release-trails-in-the-sky-sc-evolution-english-patch.495971/#post-7819736)
  • Will you work on Trails to Zero (Zero no Kiseki) Evolution and Trails to Azure (Ao no Kiseki) Evolution?
Only if XSEED releases them on PC first. Again, please buy the Trails games on PC to support them and make that more likely.
  • Should I use the Original soundtrack or the Evolution soundtrack?
I believe that the original soundtrack is superior overall, based on what I've heard myself and from what I've read online. For newcomers to the series, I highly recommend selecting the original soundtrack. For those that have played the PSP or PC version before, the Evolution version is worth trying if you want a fresh take on the soundtrack; some people do prefer it, and there are some Evolution tracks that I prefer over the originals myself. You can switch eboot.bin at any time to switch the game soundtrack, so feel free to experiment.
  • My save files disappeared and I can't save the game.
This is a known issue with dumped games on the Vita, where you can't save after leaving the Vita on sleep for a while and then resuming. Follow these steps in order to fix.
  • Can I swap the X and O buttons (X to confirm, O to cancel)?
    Try this homebrew: https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-button-swap-plugin-for-taihen.453829/

HENkaku allows version spoofing to let you onto PSN, so enable HENkaku, make sure PSN isn't demanding an update anymore (if it still is, make sure version spoofing set to the latest version, v3.65), and update the base game as you normally would (refreshing the game's live screen and hitting the download button).

The DLC is all item and equipment boosters besides the BGM, if there had been anything worth the effort we would have worked tried to make sure it was available, but as it is, you're not missing much.

Do you still need to login to PSN though?

This IS Trails in the Sky, it's the first in the trilogy.
On PSP, the game was released without the "FC" moniker, but it's the same game, FC stands for First Chapter. It's because it was originally envisioned as one game, the game grew so large in development that they were forced to split it into 2 parts.
The second part, called Trails in the Sky SC (Second Chapter) was also released on PSP, but I assume you haven't played that one.
And then there's also Trails in the Sky 3rd which is more of a spinoff/epilogue kind of deal. It's not related to the main story from FC and SC and instead tells its own side story and focuses on worldbuilding.

This isn't for PC, the game has 3 versions.
Originals, without the "Evo" suffix are available for PSP and PC, in English although 3rd is only on PC as XSEED didn't bother releasing the PSP version seeing as the console is completely dead now.
PSP and PC versions are identical for the most part with minor differences based on platforms, but in terms of content they're identical.

Evo versions are special remakes of all 3 games released exclusively in Japan, with new content, updated artwork, music, fully voiced dialogues and quality of life improvements to the interface and gameplay.
What this does is it takes XSEED's translation from the PSP/PC version of FC, and puts it in the Vita FC Evo version, while also translating all the new content.
The team behind this seems to also want to do the same for SC Evo and 3rd Evo, which will definitely be nice to have.

this sounds really nice, so i guess this one FC is the first chapter, SC and 3rd are the 2nd and 3rd.
is the 2nd and 3rd available for vita as well?

Any plans to translate the DLC eventually still? Alternatively, what would happen if one were to run the DLC with translated version of the game? Would it crash or would the items simply appear in Japanese?
Also, how hard would it be to restore the original character artwork/portraits? Not a fan of the Vita redesigns despite liking everything else.

Edit:
I just checked and the DLC files are literally just "unlock keys" so to speak, they're all just 24 bytes big .dat files with no text in them. So unless you didn't translate that stuff in your release, there's no reason why the DLC shouldn't work just fine for those that own it. I can't test it myself since I don't have a Vita on hand right now.

If you switch mai load mode 5 and load in dumped DLC the translations dependent on the eboot.bin will be reverted. We tested various ways around this, but we were unable to fix some issues that caused some important the eboot translations to get mangled. Even with the mangled translations redeeming the DLC via the camp menu didn't work properly, some of them even caused the game to crash. To be honest, I'm not even sure if the DLC works on an unaltered mai dump. You may still be able to use the DLC w/ only data.psarc patch, but know that we have not tested it and a lot of the menu text will be unpatched that way. We came across these issues as we were finishing up the main game, and since all of the remaining DLC we haven't provided a path for is just sepith/item/equipment redemption we decided to not support it for v1.0. There is a chance that we'll figure out how to get around all of these issues, but it's not a priority. If you'd like to try to help us figure it out hunt us down on discord we're both members of the r/Falcom's channel.

It'd be interesting to see if we can put in the character portrait. I prefer the Estelle and Joshua portraits of the original released, but tend to think that the rest of the character portraits are better and at least of a consistent quality, due to limited time SC takes priority... though I might look into providing steps to straight up customize the soundtrack since it'd be rad to play it with the SAV and Zanmai arrangements of the game music.

Sry for my lazyness but... I am starting The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel, Should I stop this playthrough and get this game first?
Oh god, yes. Yes. YES. While Cold Steel is beginner friendly the Trails in the Sky game's make for a much better intro to the world and it's characters, and while CS is a surprisingly competent enough JRPG without them as context I wouldn't wish anyone play those game before Trails in the Sky FC and SC. You should still play CS before 3rd (I did), but it is still preferable to play it before CS.

Do you still need to login to PSN though?
Once the base game is done patching you can turn off PSN/wifi and do the dump and patch from there.

Aye, they are, just not in English yet. You'll have to wait for the guys that made this translation patch to make ones for SC and 3rd as well which will take months.
At least. Testing will take the longest amount of time to get SC out, I'll do a call for testers in this thread when we get SC to that stage. We'll definitely need more since SC is a beast.

Well, I don't have experience with Vita romhacking yet since I don't have a Vita at the moment. Used to have one but sold it forever ago long before it got hacked.
I'm hoping to buy one that's on 3.60 or lower this or next month though.
Just to make sure, was the DLC you tested the "PCSG00488_addc" with 40 subfolders in it, each with its own 24 bytes big .dat file? Chances are you maybe had some other DLC dump that was conflicting.
I don't see what could be conflicting since the package I have doesn't come with its own eboot and it's literally all just a bunch of unlock key .dat files.

We'll definitely need more since SC is a beast.
Tell me about it.

The DLC we tested was downloaded directly from from PSN and dumped/installed via mail, but due to how Mai installs handle loading DLC some of the changes to the eboot simply don't work and it doesn't necessarily cause the dat key's to work properly 100% of the time. We know that the DLC contents are just those keys, but that doesn't mean getting the DLC up and running is trivial.

This is just legendary.
One question. Does this include the continuity errata that XSEED patched recently (some name changes, etc)?
Yes, it has the errata and the Zane -> Zin update.

just want to share

we can use the DLC with unpatched eboot.bin

you can use the DLC (it'll get us some items/sepith/ingredients), save the game, patch the eboot.bin and then load the save data to play in English

(of course you need Mai's load mode 5 to load DLCs)

Can't you just do what @ils suggested?
Alternatively, replace the eboot.bin in the patch with yours? Because what I believe you did and what is happening, you guys modified the base game's 1.0 executable (as in the eboot), rather than the patch.
And even if not, with your instruction the player ends up replacing the eboot in the base game itself, and not the patch while what happens is that it's most likely being overwritten with the eboot from the patch. Ergo, wouldn't replacing the eboot inside the patch rather than the game solve this?

Oh, so it would be much better to patch the game first, then work on the parts of the updated game? Off topic question would you translate the evolution version of the TrailsCrossbell Arc which are Trails to Zero and Trails to Azure?

Only if XSEED releases them on PC first. Again, please buy the Trails games on PC to support them and make that more likely.
