Sony releases official PS VR2 headset and controller teardown videos

ps vr teardown.png

The latest PlayStation hardware, the PS VR2, launches in a week and, in anticipation of its release, Sony has aired two teardown videos of the device. Each respective footage show an exclusive look at the headset and controller's innards and underlying technology as the respective teardown is performed by Takamasa Araki from the Mechanical Design team and Takeshi Igarashi from the Peripheral Design team. The videos start with a prominent "Do not try this at home" disclaimer as they are meant for informational purposes only.

Sony’s VR devices quickly get unofficial support on PC - you can use a PSVR on Steam via Trinus, I can’t imagine the PSVR2 being any different. None of the ports are proprietary, it’s using bog standard USB by the look of things. I suspect gearheads will have it running on PC in no time flat.
That would be nice, huh?

Guess it's just a matter of the price being right. I didn't see any effort being done to use a psvr1 on a PC, short of a paid driver that Sony would undoubtedly DMCA the crap out of.

I guess we’ll see how “locked down” Sony made the set. The original PSVR was effectively a highly specialised monitor - it accepted normal video signal over HDMI. PSVR2 appears to be significantly more complex. Trinus didn’t seem to have any issues with Sony thus far, and they seem to be more keen on PC support nowadays, with them releasing their blockbusters on Steam and whatnot. Only time will tell.

Do you know who I am?
In the US, people who use that phrase all get the same name. Karen. And since more than 2 people don't agree with your take, I can only ask... do you really think we care? As a content creator, you should care what our opinions are, not the other way around. Your livelihood depends on what WE want to play.

If you're the real deal, you've worked on some really great games. Good for you. And thank you for your contributions to the gaming community. But that would make you a Father with 2 children, creating an account on a random internet forum stating that you're Female? Just as cringe as that phrase...

And in case you didn't know: https://www.pcgamesn.com/metal-gear-solid/vr-mod-oculus-quest-2#:~:text=Metal Gear Solid VR is now available to play thanks, for the Oculus Quest 2.
You say VR isn't ready. I say these are exciting times for VR.

Don't buy VR until 2030 when consoles will be fully VR consoles rather than just the stupid VR systems that we got nowadays and the mobile like games they come with
In that same line of thought in the 90's you could claim "Don't buy a console until 2000 when they will be fully 3D rather than the blocky 2D games we get nowadays".

It is if you pair it with a PC and steam

I have access to most of the steam VR library(even cracked VR games)

I admit tho this is only a better option if you already have a capable pc that can run VR
take away the cable and your ps vr is useless. PC vr will remain on top, no amount of sony bs will change that.
Take away the controllers and the Quest 2 is useless. Dumb take.

If you enjoy playing mobile games on your PS5 using VR you're free

The original htc vive, which apparently needed like six room sensors and still lagged like a mother. The lag from the vive bothered me way more than the low res of the psvr1.
nah dude, i don't know what was wrong with your setup but my vive with two steamvr lighthouses and a 5700xt is worlds more responsive than the psvr, plus most all psvr games run at 60hz doubled to 120 where vive is smooth 90hz.

Not my setup. it was in a store where it had a whole area of space dedicated to selling it. Still, all it did was prove that the $700 asking price was bullshit when you didn't get any of the required room sensors with that, so to mimic the same kit would have shot it well over $1200 usd after taxes.

Either way, it doesn't matter. I'm not spending that much on a glorified screen just to play Half Life Alyx. If I wouldn't even spend four digits on a GPU, what makes you think I'd even consider spending that for a headset, for one game?

Reviewembargo of the VR2 has lifted. Of course some persons raise the issue of the cable which is only
seen as a minor shortcoming and also the price. Also, and validly, people worry about a potential lack
of (quality) games in the future.

The overall consensus is extremely positive however;

Horizon: Call of the Mountain gets 79 on Metacritic. I was never expecting it to be as long or deep as most other AAA titles but regarded it more as a techdemo and VR showcase which is fine by me.

I kinda wish that they would have ensured us that they had a robust plan for this headset.
For starters they could have made it backwards compatible the PSVR games.
Or made it usable on PC.

It's a lot of money for a headset when we don't have any insurance that it will have a decent library of compatible games on the PS5.

I think I will hold on to my money for now, but I won't deny that I am quite tempted.

I was interested in this but I can't justify spending more on a headset than I did on the console itself, especially when it's predecessor had such little support.
and no backwards compatibility for older PSVR 1 titles like what the actual fuck

they got away with fucking BC over with the PS4 and PS5 to make a quick buck, but trying to triple dip into a niche market to do this (I can already them trying "definitive editions") is definitely spelled for disaster...also...wires only is an idea stuck in the past
