Hello,

Recently I was going through my old GB/A collection from when I was younger, trying to discern which copies were bootlegs so I could replace them with real cartridges. I came across a few very obvious bootlegs that I got from trading with classmates at school and whatnot. I got my tri-wing screwdriver set out, cracked them open....and became absolutely confused as to what I was looking at.

First Bootleg
One of them looked like a completely normal PCB with a few modules (I didn't get a picture because it looked completely normal to me). The actual game on it is super weird though, it's some odd bootleg of a platforming game that has Pikachu in it? I took a recording, here it is:

I don't even know what the other characters are so I don't know what to google about it, frankly. I tried looking up "Pikachu GBA Bootleg" and a few other related queries but had no luck. If someone can identify it, that'd be great.

Second Bootleg
The second one was labelled as "Pokémon Lugia's Ocean Version" and I found some info online about how it was only sold physically and to this day there isn't an official .ips patch or anything.
No idea how any of my friends managed to get their hands on it, especially where I lived. That isn't what's bothering me, however. What's bothering me is that when I split it open, I found this:
0AXBps1.png

For those who don't read Katakana, I'll translate:
ホクトノケン - Hokuto No Ken
キャラクラロム3 - Character ROM 3

So, basically, I said to myself, "That's funny, they named their bootleg chip or whatever after Fist of the North Star, ok" and kind of left it at that. I thought that "Hokuto No Ken" was the name of a line of burnable bootleg ROM chip. Kind of dumb of me to think that in retrospect...but whatever.

Third Bootleg
This one was a cartridge labelled "Pokémon Arcoiris" and had an image of Shadow Lugia on it. I looked online for a bit and found some guys who were discussing that they found it at a flea market years ago, but nothing really concrete as to its origin. In any case, I split it open and took a look.
A5kUseZ.png

マジカルハロウィンJC - Magical Halloween JC
サブS-ROM - Sabu [sub?] S-ROM

Wait a second...Magical Halloween? I've seen those pachinko machines in places in Shinjuku and Doutonbori...
What gives?

Then I realized that since both of these ROM chips were labelled with existing commercial properties, I started to think that maybe these were real GBA games that were then trashed and just overwritten. So I looked up how many of these games there were so I could match them, and get this:
There are no Hokuto No Ken/Fist of the North Star games for GBA.
There are no Magical Halloween games for the GBA.

So...what the heck are these chips, then? I have no idea what I'm looking at and I would love to know. They've been in my collection for over a decade at this point and I'd love to identify more about them.

In addition,
1. I'd like to make legit, distributable .IPS patches of these carts that I have, as well as some other bootlegs. But I have no way of dumping GBA carts at the moment. What's the cheapest way to cleanly dump GBA ROMS?
2. Does anyone know the "ground zero" for these cartridges?
3. Where the heck did these modules come from on the PCB?

Thanks.

So, that first bootleg appears to be the hack of Tiny Toon Adventures (NES). Bootleggers like to use PocketNES to port their crap to the GBA to stretch out their lineups.

You can cleanly dump Game Boy Advance ROMs using a Nintendo DS, a DS Flashcart, and a homebrew tool named GBA Backup Tool.

It is not possible to overwrite normal GBA cartridges, as the ROM chip that is used is OTP, or One-time Programmable. Those ROM chips in the bootlegs are just standard Flash chips manufactured by Fujitsu, whereas normal carts are usually manufactured by Macronix. The chip under the battery appears to be a simple volatile RAM chip, for saving. This is why they need the battery, otherwise saving will become pointless because that battery-backed RAM will lose its contents upon shutting off the console.

Ground zero for these types of cartridges is usually China.

Hope this answers your questions!

Yep, that's the one. Thanks!

That's what I figured. But then what's with the labels? Why were they labelled as such? Were they prototypes, manufacturing defects, chips that were intended for other platforms that got re-used, etc? I'd love to know.

Makes sense. But the two Pokémon rom hacks I mentioned have a lot of Spanish in them and are broken mixtures of English and Spanish. Did those come from China too? Why would Chinese bootleggers use Spanish-origin hacks? Nowadays there are repros of hacks distributed online but being that there are no such patches for Lugia's Ocean and Arcoiris I'd just like to know how these bootleggers got the ROMs.

Awesome. Thanks. I just have a DSi so I'll have to pick up an original or a Lite somewhere. Maybe Book Off will have a cheap one next time I can get to one.

Honestly, I have no idea.

Again, I got nothing. My best guess is that they were manufactured in China, and the factory was given a ROM to flash.

They were definitely repurposed from other flash repros; these carts are some of the earliest GBA bootlegs. Starting out, manufacturing costs would have been higher back then, so it would make economic sense to find ways to cut down the cost for flash memory.

Almost all repros come from China. Their economies of scale allow for pricing too low not to source from them. They try to find the most popular hacks to sell the most units, regardless of language. (e.g. French: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32888513265.html)

The mystery continues! Thank you for the replies and info though!

Yeah, these are quite old at this point. I'd be interested to know what they were repurposed from.

So that Fist of the North Star chip is almost 100% pulled from the Atomiwave arcade game:
https://mame.spludlow.co.uk/Machine.aspx?name=fotns
https://github.com/mamedev/mame/blob/master/src/mame/drivers/naomi.cpp#L1357

Probably "ax1903m01.ic13" in MAME terminology. The ROM you have is 128Mbit or 16MByte, and the arcade game uses uses 16MByte ROMs too. Interestingly your chip is PSOP44 while MAME claims that Atomiswave uses TSOP48, so was this part of a bootleg Fist of the North Star cartridge?

Oh wow, that's interesting as hell! Thanks so much for that link, that's really awesome. Would it be reasonable to assume that the other one was taken from a pachinko machine?

On the subject, has anyone had their own custom GBA carts made by an aliexpress seller or anyone else easily accessible? Or, I guess, bought a bunch of those reflashable bootlegs to DIY it? Curious for if & when I manage to finish my homebrew game...

Yeah that's what I'd assume, or a standard slot machine based on what I saw on Konami's website. MAME doesn't have any information I could find on that one, probably not emulated by it yet.

I've been looking but I can't find anything with regards to getting them produced by an Aliexpress seller. I think at that point you'd have to use Alibaba or Taobao and either use a translator or find someone that can translate for you.

Is this a thing? I was looking for these a while back when I was making ROM Hacks but I couldn't find anything. I'd love more info.

I guess that would be less accessible but still doable.

Yeah, eg. this flasher says it can do it, and links to this wiki about different carts.

Personally, I've been using BennVenn's Joey gen3. It's pretty much worked with everything I've thrown at it, you just need to select the correct setting to rewrite the flash cart. Ben keeps it updated whenever new GB/GBC/GBA cartridges surface in the market.

Thanks - the joey looks good, but availability is unclear and it costs twice as much as the gbxcart rw I linked above.
Sounds like it's not too hard to find suitable carts to reflash then? I'd probably end up going for Pokemon Emerald ones, as I like green, and my GB Micro is green.

Don't know how allowed it is to share the links over the forum, but I have a few bookmarks to Aliexpress resellers that have games for ~$4 a piece that look like they can be reflashed,

Heres my GBA ruby which looks next to identical to your Bootleg 2, got it from ebay last august, used, so im guessing its a quite old bootleg. It runs fine, except theres a graphical glitch in the caves on a island.

Yep, yours is a Hokuto No Ken Character ROM 2, whereas mine is a Character ROM 3. Very interesting and thanks for sharing!

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".

Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more.
