Sony's mysterious PS4 Neo has been officially revealed as the PS4 Pro, and will be releasing this year on November 10, 2016. The console will cost $399USD/£349GBP, and will support 4K gaming and videos. Playstation VR will get a huge visual boost on the Pro, as well as older games getting "forward support" to allow them to be played in 4K resolution.

It'll do 4K. People have to stop comparing to PC and the 60 or even solid 30 target. People are perfectly fine with console games now frequently dipping well below 30 and others (like just cause 3), constantly chugging long at sub 30. Don't see why it would change for 4K. Oh it's 4K, dipping to 20fps, that's fine, console gamers will be fine with it.

See, I'd agree that 4K @30FPS would be ok for the standard console gamer, but I honestly don't think that even console-only gamers are going to be very happy with framerates dipping consistently to 15FPS or under, unless the game is VERY well optimized and not very graphics-intensive

History would show otherwise. Shadow of the colossus consistently runs like that, considered one of the ps2s greatest games by many. GTA 5 could frequently dip from 30 on ps3/xbox when there was heavy action. Skyrim chugs to 0fps on ps3. Just cause 3 is basically broken on ps4/xbox one now. All sold fine, there was no mass outrage. I can't ever recall any outrage over game performance on consoles that had a siginificant impact on the games sales/reception. I see no reason it would suddenly change.

So games on the ps4 can work directly with the hardware, right? rather than going through an OS layer like on a PC? How much of a bump would that give to FPS and visual fidelity compared to the equivalent specs on a PC?

I guess now would be the time to sell my PS4 so that its value doesn't go down like crazy.

Still, I think even then the net cost is too high. I'm a student and therefore broke by definition, is it worth the upgrade?

And yeah what someone else said, the 2nd gen to feature 1080p 60 can't even do 1080p 60 right, I doubt 4k will truly be as smooth as promised.

People have wanted 1080p/60 for a long time. It will finally be possible (most games average frame rate) on PS4 pro.
Yea, but with this focus on 4K, it's like they are pushing consumers to think it 1080p/60fps isn't enough. Just my opinion.

As it is, I find it incredible odd that Sony would downplay the use of 4K Bluray when they were on the forefront of pushing that sort of tech in the first place even since jumping into the gaming industry with the PS1. They are giving Microsoft the edge there. And pushing the GPU when the CPU is already somewhat lacking, imo, sounds like it'll cause a bottleneck. The push of using TFlops for a system's performance reminds me of the old days of "16-bit", "Blast Processing", etc, when it's a small factor in the overall scheme of things.

It still goes through an OS layer on the PS4; the PS4 OS is derived from NetBSD, which is a type of Unix.

There isn't always a graphical settings configuration on the PC version of game that exactly matches the graphics settings on PS4, so it's difficult to compare, which is why people compare it to PCs that cost the same or slightly less than the PS4; in this case the PC will outperform the PS4 at the same price point.

The only real reason to own a PS4 is for the exclusives, including EA Sports games, which haven't been on PC since ~2009.

It costs more than $400 to get a graphics card good enough for 4K60...

I don't see it as at all possible for these consoles to pull down even 24FPS in 4K if we're talking about AAA titles. Remember that these are just revisions to consoles that couldn't even do 1080p@30 with high settings. The benefits of 4K quickly disappear if you're talking about lowering the detail of objects and effects just to get a playable frame rate.
