Been out of the loop for RA on the 3DS since the 1.3.6 versions.
How stable are the latest nightlies? I've read about some issues but I don't want to update the cores I have installed until someone can tell me if the latest are safe

They are perfectly fine, you just have to use rgui instead of xmb for now.
The 3ds port isnt dead anymore, check the commit history I have fixed a few major bugs and for those who dont know new ROMs are still getting released today and old emu versions wont support there mappers so old versions limit your ROM selection.

So just update, xmb will be fixed in time and cheevos support is almost ready.

Would it be possible for the rgui version of the Load Content menu to not have "Favorites/Image/Music" on there? Or at least move "Start directory" to the top? This issue is what's keeping me on 1.4.1.

Yeah I did read about issues with XMB, but it's good to know that RGUI is working fine :)
Thanks for the heads up!

I have a problem with genesis plus gx and picodrive emulators. When I navigate to the folder where my roms are located it freezes and then I have to reboot my N3DS. Do I have to put them in a specific folder or configure some settings?

Since my post was pushed into a corner shortly after posting it, I'm assuming it's been ignored, so...

Yes, I have submitted a pull request to remove those since they dont even belong there, they are playlists not directorys, they are duplicates from "Collections" and that is there proper location.

Is there a way to update all the cores through one QR code in FBI (or another app)? FBI can't extract the 7z archive on buildbot.
Don't want to have to FTP or manually update each core one at a time through FBI's TitleDB.com feature every time.

One thing you can do is start with a clean CIAS folder install the "current directory" in FBI to install them all at once. also always selecting install and delete will help keep the folder clean

That's how I do it.
What I want to know is if FBI or another app can "update all" without me needing to use my PC. There is a QR scanner/installer on FBI but it doesn't seem to work when trying to update all the cores at once.

Sweet, it's back on top! Favorites and Music may still be around, but they don't bother me so much now. Time for me to update.

To GBA games, you can make them into VC for 3ds(.cia), install and play.

Finally, just recently I received my R4i Gold 3DS Plus in the mail. I haven't had a chance yet to follow the 3DS Guide to home-brew my nn2dsxl, although I plan on it very soon now that I have what I need!

Up until now I've been playing my GBA games through my DSTWO+ using the plugin TempGBA on my nn2dsxl; Ver. 11.5.0-38U (which doing that the resolution doesn't look as sharp and crisp as compared to playing on a DS Lite, GBA SP or Emulator) Is there a visual notable difference with RetroArch? Or also converting my ROMS into the VC emulator for 3ds via (.cia), install and play? I would like to know if it's worth actually investing the time into this to have better emulation and visuals when playing GBA.

Doing this should be an upgrade when coming from TempGBA on my DSTWO+, right? Thanks everyone.

If you are to use GBA games on 3DS, use mGBA. Retroarch doesn't handle GBA as well and looks a bit worse but should look better than TempGBA at default resolution.

gpSP runs much better and at full speed for most games, there's some quirks with it like screen tearing but if you apply a video overlay or set the frame delay to 1 it goes away.

If you want perfect emulation look at rom VC injects with asdolo's tool, those lack savestates and other emulation features but the game will always run as intended.

Retroarch has a lot of customizable settings so you can make it look however you want, 1:1 PAR, fullscreen stretched like some kind of monster, etc

mGBA does wonders for most GBA games except those that are way heavy on size, like Golden Sun 2 or Mother 3.
Although last I tried it was way back in 0.6.0, I have yet to try the latest nightlies.

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
Karma177 @ Karma177: @The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really...
